Real Santorini is not anymore Fira and Oia villages. Do discover villages places located within the island in locations naturally protected from pirates on hills or carved on side of small ravines. One of the most characteristic of them is Vothonas.
Although most of houses are recently constructed, many cave houses of ancient times can be seen around on the sides of a ravine -ancient river waiting for reconstruction.
The village is inhabited mostly by locals working on vineyards and other tourist activities in other parts of the island.
The main advantage of this village is that is located almost in the center of the island so access to many beaches, to Airport, to boats main port, and the capital city of Fira are all at distances of 3-5 kms.
The best point is that you have best holidays far from tourist crowds, plus you have the possibility for exciting walks in the deep country, visiting very old trails , ancient churches, paths with incredible view.
From the very top of the village you can see around and both sides of sea around the island. One side of the wild caldera, the other side to smooth landscape with fields and beaches.
My house (carved and builded on the rock, house of 300 years of age ) consists of two large cave rooms linked together through a small cave dome corridor.
Furniture is simple as much as possible, beds and sofa beds are stone made since the entire island there is no timber trail. The living room is a large vaulted space is on one side a corner sitting area with large cushions, able to accommodate many persons.
Years of meditation and wonderful Parties on the terrace , has filled this home with vibration of sweetness and love .
From the terrace you got an unlimited view to vineyards and far end at the Sea.

Having used Airbnb for a number of years in my travelling, I would say our stay at Sofia’s place is one of the best experience. The Cave house is full of characters, and conveniently located on the island of Santorini. It comes with a large terrace with a wonderful seaside and hill view, situates within a local neighbourhood. Shops and restaurants are within 10-15 mins walk.
We had a hired car for first few days and could travel to most communities within the island within 15-20 mins journey. Even if you don’t have car, there is a bus stop near by; or a bus stop for the more frequent Kamari route is only 10 mins walk. Alternatively Sofia can arrange for transfer at more reasonable local rate.
This has come really handy for heading to airport, or other towns during out of hours. Price is really reasonable compare to other places on Santorini. More importantly, Sofia is an AMAZING host who gave really good advices and recommendations to go about, and communication always super efficient. Would highly recommend to anyone who is looking for great stay, at reasonable price and centrally located accommodation on the island of Santorini

Sofia’s place was absolutely beautiful and so was Sofia herself. She was so sweet and very helpful, especially with restaurants/beaches/towns to check out in the area. The house was in the center of the island so it was quick to travel to the towns. Her space was also very unique because it was built into a cave. There was also a spacious private terrace with the view of the ocean. I highly recommend on staying here!
Air bnb reviews:
Sofia was very welcoming and provided us with fantastic hospitality. Sofia gave us tips on where to travel to avoid mass tourists and where the locals hang out. Sofia’s house was amazing. The house stayed cool during the middle of the day where it was at its hottest. It was only a couple minutes walk into the local village. Overall, it was an amazing stay.
Sofia’s place is magnificent! It was quiet and a perfect place to explore the island. Sofia was very kind and hospitable. She had great recommendations for fun places to go and helped us arrange a great deal on a rental car. The house was beautiful, very clean and spacious with a terrific view and deck. Highly recommend!
Sophia’s place was even more beautiful in real life! From her crisp white linen and comfy beds, to her interesting art works and trinkets.
Sophia’s place was both comfortable and thoughtfully styled. Located in the beautiful village of Vothonas, Sophia’s place was conveniently located to the beaches, the main villages, and the roads less travelled. Getting around the island was easy as Sophia arranged a hire car for us. After visiting the main towns of Fira and Oia we were relieved to be able to get away from the crowds and enjoy the authentic Santorini experience Sophia’s place has to offer.
Sophia herself was a wonderful host who was committed to helping us get the most out of our time in Santorini. Sophia shared some fantastic local tips about places to visit and to eat, all of which helped to make our trip truly memorable. All in all we had a fantastic stay and would highly recommend Sophia and her gorgeous place to anyone seeking a relaxing and authentic Santorini experience!
On our arrival I was a little worried that the house was a tad isolated, but in no time at all we found all the conveniences of the lovely little village, and after visiting the more touristy areas I was glad of the peaceful home to return to. You will need transport to get around the island but Sofia helped us with a very reasonably priced car rental as well as other valuable information on where to go and places to eat. You have total privacy but Sofia is close by to help with anything. The home is beautiful, comfortable and lovely and cool on the hottest of days. I would highly recommend staying at Sofia’s home.

Beautiful Santorini, Beautiful Villa!!
Left on Jun 20, 2017 for a stay in Jun 2017
The village of Volthanos is very charming. We had a very comfortable stay and would love to return. The bedrooms of the villa are inside caves, but very well refurbished. Everything works, and the villa has modern amenities. The owner know everything about Santorini, and everyone knows her and welcomes her guests. We were so charmed!

We found paradise in Sofia’s villa in Santorini. Tucked away in a quiet village setting away from the crowds of Thira. Amazing villa with great indoor and outdoor space. Sofia is an amazing host…. You won’t be disappointed!

Sofia our hostess greeted us with open arms, she did everything in her power to make us feel at home. Friends sent wine for my birthday celebrations and she went out if her way to have it ready at home before we arrived. The home is spacious, beautifully and tastefully designed with an eye for detail. The electricity, air-conditioners and water works perfectly.
The kitchen is clean and well equipped. The house is in a village and not on top of the noisy tourist areas, which is what we loved most. There is a Carrefour down the road for shopping. Nothing is too far away on the island so you can easily go to any restaurant from there.
We hired a vehicle, so I’m not too sure how public transport works. We loved every moment there and feel like we have been friends with Sofia forever. We hope to return next year!
