An ideal vacation rental in Chania A rare find, this 18th century house is amongst a handful of Ottoman mansions remaining in Crete. Ideally located at the heart of the old town of Chania in the Turkish district of Splantzia, steps away from the old market of the city, overlooking the majestic minaret and in the farground the White Mountains.Inside, the house is cozy and features well-preserved ottoman interior decorations, like the tiles in the kitchen, part the original hammam (Turkish steam bath) with its fountain in marble and the unique remained in Crete, wood ceiling in the living room, full with small panels in relief surrounded by edgings and moldings.
The first room (living room) was used as reception room and exclusively men’s place (selamlic) while on the top floor, the other large room (salon) for the Harem. On the back side, a small terrace gave privacy among flowers and plants.

Great house, great host, great place
“The house is really great, as it is described, comfortable, clean, equipped with all the houshold electrical appliances, quiet and in a beautiful position with respect to the rest of the city. The landord is very kind, dedicated to his gests, ready to support and give information and suggestion. We have enjoyed the house, the host and the place, and if we return to Chania for sure we will return here.”

Unique accommodation in a great location

This is an incredible old house right in the heart of Chania, and is perfect for anyone looking for somewhere away from the run-of-the-mill hotels & apartments, as it gives a real flavour of Cretan life & history. The owner is wonderful and very kind. There are great restaurants nearby (we ate at both the one underneath the property and the one across the road several times during our stay, and had fantastic food every time), as well as the waterfront and shops only a short walk away. Our only problem was that we were a little cold on a couple of days as there was an unexpected storm, but if you bring a jumper for the evenings at this time of year you will be fine!. Would thoroughly recommend.
Our first trip to Crete and we wanted a base in the old town of Chania as an introduction to the way of life there. We wanted a self catering apartment rather than a hotel. What we found was Beys House and it suited our needs perfectly. Situated in the Splanzia district, slightly off the beaten track, so it is quiet, yet only a few steps from Splanzia Square and the small streets leading to the main square and the harbour. The little square has two eating places so we could eat out without any walking – The Well of the Turk, a well established restaurant serving excellent local food cooked by Jenni (who just happens to be the Beys House owners mother) and a wine bar which also serves excellent lighter dishes. We hired a car and were able to park off the road in a private space near to Beys House run by William, a lovely friendly, helpful guy. The house is exactly as it appears in the photos with some sight changes to the furniture. Everything we needed was on the first or second floors. The entrance on the ground floor is narrow and the stairs steep, and the stairs between first and second floors are steep too, so a warning if you don’t like stairs. There are also stairs to the third floor bedroom that we didn’t use. The kitchen is well equipped and everything is brand new. Similarly with all the bed and bath linen. Such a luxury! There are two living rooms, one on the first floor and another on the second which could be an extra bedroom – the house could sleep 6 comfortably – with wifi available everywhere. The main bedroom has an en-suite toilet and hand basin with a small private terrace that receives the morning sun. The main bathroom, shared by the whole house has a big bathtub plus separate shower, as well as an impressive Ottoman marble water spout left over from when the house was a Haman. We spent a lot of time on the private terrace on the second floor, surrounded by hydrangea, olive, jasmine and bougainvillea flowers. This received sun from late morning until early evening. Perfect for an aperitif before wandering out for something to eat in any of the thousands of eating establishments (or just out to The Well of The Turk again!). Everything was handled locally by Theodore (Beys House owners father — so it’s a real family affair) who met our taxi, helped with the luggage and was a great help with local knowledge about where to eat, drink, buy jewellery, where to go and how to get there. Thanks for making our stay in Chania just right.

We were urban dwellers for 20 years (Center City Philadelphia) but have lived in the Northern Rockies (at elevation 2000 meters +\-) for 25 years. The home in Chania was both a surprise and a joy. It is a very large space for 2 people, but we used all of the rooms during our stay. The neighborhood is just terrific. We spent days wandering around the streets and alleys and enjoyed the Old City. The balcony over the street was great for evening cocktails for 2. The outside shower on the 3rd floor was a joy. The 2nd floor bath is photo worthy (see for yourself when you get there). Our host, Theo, was the high point of the trip. Engaging, knowledgable, well read, and a great guy. We spent so much time here that we have to come back again to tour the rest of Crete. Chania, particularly Old City is a good vacation spot.

We had excellent holidays!! The children enjoyed in the sea most ot the time and we enjoyed literally everything we did!! The house was comfortable and fresh, shops nearby, tavernas all around walking distance – we especially loved the Well of the Turk. The rooms were airy, light and clean and we had a lovely view over Hania. Thank you also to all the people who helped make our stay agreeable, especially the owner who was well above average helpful and good humoured. We would readily recommend this place to any of our friends.
Activities and Excursions
There are many places to visit in Chania , and plenty of Activities.
Most visited places in the Old city , is the Arcaelogical museum on main street leading to the port. The building itself is an imposing Venetian monastery of San Francesco which gives an extra charm to the space. During the period of the Turkish occupation it was the Muslim mosque of Yussuf Pasha. It is easy to find but.
Located across from the Cathedral Square in the Old Port area and the entrance is very discreet. It is a small space and do not need more than an hour to see the exhibits, some of which are of outstanding beauty such as the mosaic floors, jewelery and decorative glass. The collections presented include Minoan finds from the city of Chania, prehistoric from caves, Minoan from various parts of the county, finds from the graves of the Geometric period, and historical discoveries from the city of Chania and several other towns around the aerea.
